FESTIVALS Switzerland

Swiss festivals unite

by

To make their voice heard in Swiss political circles and improve their coordination, the main Swiss film festivals have got together to set up the Festivals Conference. Ivo Kummer, president of the new association and director of Solothurn Film Festival, explains the aim of such a grouping: “The amount granted [to festivals] by the Confederation is insufficient. Each festival receives a bit, but not enough. I would therefore like festival funds to be increased…”.

The dialogue established between the different events also aims to coordinate their organisation: “Our credibility among sponsors depends on our being able to set out common criteria”, commented Kummer.

Each festival must have been in operation for five years, last a minimum of five days and organise a competition with a jury. Such are the rather demanding conditions for joining the Festivals Conference, which so far has 11 members: Castellinaria International Youth Film Festival, Cinéma Tous Ecrans - Geneva International Film Festival, Fantoche - International Animated Film Festival, Black Movie Festival, Locarno International Film Festival, Fribourg International Film Festival, Winterthur International Short Film Festival, Neuchâtel International Fantasy Film Festival, Solothurn Film Festival, Visions du Réel and Zurich Film Festival.
