French assistant director Jean-Christophe Delpias will start shooting his directorial debut Valparaiso on November 16. The film, a Franco/Belgian/Luxembourg co-production, was written by Delpias and Vincent Maillard.

Valparaiso is the story of the clash of the moral and professional worlds of a middle-aged father, Balthazar (veteran French actor Jean-François Stevenin), and his adult daughter, Emma (Belgian-Portuguese actress and singer Helena Noguerra).

Balthazar is a top manager at an oil company, and has a good (but somewhat secretive) relationship with his daughter, who is a Green Party politician at the European Union.

Their public and private worlds collide when an oil tanker of a company that has just been taken over by the father’s major corporation causes a major ecological disaster on the French coast and Emma is put in charge of the investigation into the accident.

The ambitious film will shoot in Luxembourg, Belgium and in the French port of Marseilles. It is a production of French outfit Agat Films Ex Nihilo, in co-production with Artémis from Belgium, and Samsa Film from Luxembourg.

Broadcasters ARTE and RTBF are also on board, and the project has received backing from the Luxembourg Film Fund, Procirep, National Film Centre (CNC), the MEDIA Programme and the Belgian Tax Shelter.
