New Czech films take New York

Czech Center New York, in collaboration with BAMcinématek and Film Forum, presents New Czech Films, the 11th annual program of new films from the Czech Republic.

The series opens November 4 with the North American premiere of Tomorrow There Will Be..., an opera based on the 1950 show trial of Milada Horakova. Director Jan Hřebejk originally planned to include scenes from the opera performance in his film Kawasaki's Rose [+see also:

but decided instead to film the opera in full.

Other screenings at Czech Center New York include 's documentary Forgotten Transports: To Poland. A political scientist and historian, Pribyl devoted 10 years to researching and producing this documentary about the fate of Czechoslovak Jews sent to concentrations camps abroad during the Holocaust. The film is the last in Pribyl's series of four films on the topic. It screens November 5.

Rozálie Kohoutová's Roma Boys and Viera Čákanyová's Alda both won prizes at the 2009 FAMU Fest, an annual competition of student works held by the Prague Film Academy. In Roma Boys, a young, gay Roma journalist searches for love in his own community. In Alda, a woman slowly slips into the oblivion of Alzheimers disease. Czech Center New York presents the two films back-to-back on November 8.

Jitka Rudolfová's Karlovy Vary title Dreamers has its North American premiere November 7 at Czech Center New York. The film portrays a group of friends who, dissatisfied with their lives as they enter their 30s, move in to a remote cabin together.

Film Forum will screen Hřebejk's Berlinale title Kawasaki's Rose November 24–December 7. The director will take part in a Q&A session following the November 27 screening of his film.

The series closes November 9 with the North American premiere of Tomáš Mašín's 3 Seasons in Hell [+see also:

at BAMcinématek at BAM Rose Cinemas. The director will be on hand to answer questions from the audience.
