With his latest film, O principio da incerteza, Manuel de Oliveira turned once more for inspiration to a novel by Agustina Bessa-Luís, Jóia de Família. This tale of love, friendship, hate and revenge is also de Oliveira´s return to the city of Porto and a merciless analysis of problems afflicting contemporary Portuguese society, as portrayed by the relationship between António, a rich spoilt young man, and José, son of a servant-woman.
