FESTIVALS Germany

Teutonic newcomers to Raindance

by

Dieter Kosslick, the Director of the Berlin International Film Festival, will be present at the Goethe Institut in London on Thursday 24 October to mark the opening of the German Section of the Raindance Film Festival (23 October – 1 November). The German section will have its own showcase at the Goethe Institut, co-organiser of the event- in South Kensington, far away from the frantic streets of Soho where most Raindance independent films are screened.
The selection of the seven German titles was coordinated by the Berlin-based First Steps Awards which promote young talent from Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
Each year, five newcomers are rewarded with a total of Euros72,000 by the event’s five initiators: Constantin Films, Teamworx, Sat 1, Spiegel TV and Mercedes-Benz
This year’s Raindance selection includes works from each of First Steps’ five categories: commercials, shorts, documentaries, 60min feature and full-length features. They include Matthias Keilich’s Rotterdam and Karlovy Vary hit, Neither Fish Nor Fowl, chosen to inaugurate the event on Thursday 24 October. Other titles include this year’s winner of the Fipresci in Rotterdam, Getting My Brother Laid, the winner of the First Steps award for Best Feature Film Under 60 minutes, A Long Night’s Journey Into the Future, and the documentary, Pinochet’s Children.
