Vienna hosts Kurdish Film Week
- Fifteen Kurdish films and a tribute to pre-eminent filmmaker Yilmaz Güney in the Austrian capital from 8-14 November
Sercawan is the title of a review of 15 Kurdish documentaries, fiction and short films that will be presented to Austrian audiences during the 3rd Kurdish Film Week scheduled to take place in Vienna from 8-14 November.
The programme includes the Austrian premieres of: Blackboards by Samira Makhmalbaf. Two years ago this story about two teachers in Kurdistan shared the Jury Prize at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival, and went on to become France’s most successful Iranian film ever and The Photo by a young Kurdish director called Kazim Oz, about a journey that two young men make in the Kurdish region of Turkey. Another highlight is the premiere of Kenan Kilic’s Nachtreise, winner of this year’s Vienna Film Festival prize. The programme includes a tribute to Yilmaz Güney, winner of the Palme d’Or in Cannes in 1982 for Yol (ex-aequo). The event will close with conferences about “Kurds and Cinema” and “Women and Society”.
