Documentary celebrated at BAFTA

- The Best of the previous year's UK documentaries celebrated at British Academy of Film and Television Arts in London

The best of British documentary filmmaking was celebrated last night at the BAFTA in London, where the Grierson Awards 2002 presented 8 prizes in seven different categories.
Little Bird Production for BBC Four won best historical documentary for Ceaucescu: The King of Communism. Omnibus: David Hockney’s Secret Knowledge, produced by BBC Specialist Factual for BBC 2 was awarded best documentary on the arts. Southern Comfort, the life of a female-to-male transsexual in the backwoods of Georgia, produced by Q-Ball for BBC Four, was named best international documentary. The other winners were Kelly And Her Sisters (Carlton Production for ITV1) – best documentary on a contemporary issue, The Trust (Channel 4) about the daily workings of one of the biggest hospital trusts in the UK, won best documentary series and Faking It: Burger Man and Chef, the Most Entertaining documentary. Finally, a special Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Sir Richard Attenborough.
The Grierson Awards, established in 1972 in honour of now-deceased legendary Scottish filmmaker, John Grierson, celebrate the best documentaries screened or broadcast in the during the previous year. The event is supported by the UK Film Council and BBC Four.
