BOX OFFICE Ireland

The Magdalene Sisters conquer Ireland

by

Peter Mullan’s powerful and emotional film The Magdalene Sisters has broken the Euros1m barrier at the Irish box office and is now the biggest domestic production since Alan Parker’s Angela’s Ashes, and the biggest Irish film of 2002, as reported by the Irish Film Board.
The film is still playing on 36 screens in its fifth week on general release and is set to continue to hold until the New Year. “The film is really holding its own against the Hollywood blockbusters and many exhibitors expect it to play up until and during the Christmas period. It has generated unprecedented word-of-mouth and bodes well for the future of the Irish film industry,” said Niamh McCaul of Eclipse Pictures who are distributing the film in Ireland.
Commenting on the success of the film, Peter Mullan said, “I think a lot of it is because Ireland has changed so much in the past 10 to 15 years, so maybe the time is right to stand back and take stock of what the country was formerly like.”
“What’s incredible is that we’re getting reports that the audience in Ireland is of all age groups and that a large number of the clergy are going to see it,” he added.
The Magdalene Sisters, which has won several prestigious international awards including the Golden Lion for Best film at the last Venice Film Festival, will also compete for Best European Film of the year at this Saturday’s European Film Academy Awards in Rome.
