A new president for Avance sur recettes

by

Jean-Claude Lamy has been nominated president of the Commission for the assistance fund ‘Avance sur recettes’ (Advance on Earnings).
The new president, who is supported by French Culture Minister Jean-Jacques Aillagon, will officially be instated next January, thus taking the place of Frédéric Mitterand. Created in 1960, “Avance sur recettes” will be granted 24.1 million euros during 2003 in order to finance full-length films, with special regard for newcomers and independent productions.
Journalist and editorial director Jean-Claude Lamy published the “World Dictionary of Cinema” with Larousse before taking the helm of France 3 Cinema, a branch of France Télévisions, in 1997. During his stint there, he co-produced numerous feature-length films like Lars von Trier’s Dancer in the dark, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Amélie, and Nicole Garcia’s L’adversaire. He also discovered fresh, young talents like Erick Zonca (The Dreamlife of angels) and Zabou Breitman (Se souvenir des belles choses).
For the occasion of Lamy’s nomination, the Minister of Culture also paid homage to the dynamism of current president Frédéric Mitterand and the fact that his decisions “often coincided with those made by festival juries and movie-goers.”
