DVD to help distribution

by

Danish documentary films are on the rise. Due to the digital technology the Danish Film Institute sees the possibilities to screen more Danish documentaries in movie theatres, now then ever before. "A lot of very good documentaries never get to the public for the simple reason that it is to expensive to make a 35 mm copy needed for a screening in a movie theatre. Our idea is to play the documentaries with high quality dvd equipment and a projector that throws the images up on the screen" said Anders Geertsen director of distribution at the DFI.
Up till now the DFI has given out around million 1 Danish crones every year to documentary films, making it possible for a about 3 documentaries to get on 35 mm format, each reaching to the cost of a about 300.000 Danish crones. But now with the dvd-technology the cost is minimum and therefore the money can be spent on buying the right equipment for the 10 movie theatres interested in the experiment. DocuZone in Holland is already on its way with about 43 documentaries scheduled to be screened next year with digital equipment.
