FESTIVALS Denmark

Copenhagen versus Odense

by

Just set up and already in trouble. Copenhagen’s new international film festival was scheduled to unroll in August 2003, however the chosen date will clash with a concurrent short film festival taking place in Odense. Chr. Braad Thomsen, the artistic director of the Odense event said that although each festival targeted different audiences, he felt that the short film festival ran the risk of being ignored by the media feeding frenzy that the new Copenhagen event is likely to generate. “I will try whatever I can to find another solution that is not going to harm Odense, but I cannot give any guarantee that we will be able to change the date of the Copenhagen festival,” said its director, Janne Giese in an interview with Danish daily paper, “Politiken”. Copenhagen will benefit from the presence of two world famous filmmakers like Bille August and Pedro Almodovar who will both sit on the jury and present their films, and the event’s pro-European bias is bound to create worldwide media interest.
