Record 2001 for exhibitors

2001 was a record year for the Austrian film exhibition sector with a reported attendance of 18.984.739, according to Kurt Kaufmann, the Director of the Association of cinemas and organisers of audiovisual events, in an interview with Austrian daily newspaper “Der Standard”. The positive upward trend in attendance continued throughout 2002, and is forecast to pass the 19-million-mark by the end of the year. That number could even be considerably higher when the second instalment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy is released in Austria. Kaufmann also pointed out that competition between exhibitors had become so fierce that a number of cinemas cut the price of cinema tickets by between Euros 3 and Euros 5.
