First European Film and Audiovisual Day

Strasbourg hosted the first European Film and Audiovisual Day, an event that replaces the traditional Forum of European Cinema, an annual event staged in French cities over the last six years.
Presided over by Belgian director, Gérard Corbiau and organised with the European Parliament, the event took place under the patronage of Pedro Almodovar, Ettore Scola and Peter Fleichmann, and was partnered by ARTE TVl, Adami (an actors’ and musicians’ representative organisation) and Germany’s Baden-Wurttemberg “Lande”.
The programme included a competition for European short films and several debates that members of the public were invited to attend. Keynote speeches were made by major European film industry operators and institutional representatives such as Viviane Reding, the EU Commissioner for Education and Culture, Patrick Cox, the President of the European Parliament and Michel Rocard, President of the European Parliament’s Culture Commission. All the speakers stressed the need to “facilitate the creation of a common European policy for films and audiovisual products, ensure that the work developed by the Community’s various institutions converged in a common goal and satisfied the requirements all industry sectors.”
The reports that were presented and discussed during this day-long event included “Europe’s film and audiovisual heritage in the face of EC expansion” by Gaetano Stucchi, head of FEPAC; “The Impact of EC expansion on the European Audiovisual Sector" by Luciana Castellina, a senior board member of Eurovisions; “European TV Today & Tomorrow” by Wolfang Closs, the director of the European Audiovisual Observatory and “The Circulation of European Films: A Challenge-a-Day” by Faruk Gunaltay, head of distribution at Eurimages.
