This Christmas, Italian audiences will find something that appeals to all tastes at their local cinema. The cinematographic Santa Claus brought Italians the latest comedy by the popular trio of comics, Aldo, Giovanni & Giacomo, La leggenda di Al, John e Jack (The Legend of Al, John and Jack). Released on 20 December, the feature shot right to the top of the Italian box office, closely followed by the latest zany seasonal offering from the tried-and-true comedy duo, Massimo Boldi-Christian De Sica, Natale sul Nilo (Christmas on the Nile). British cinema will put in a strong showing with Plots with a View starring Alfred Molina (Chocolat and Brenda Blethyn (Saving Grace) and Gurinder Chada’s immensely watchable Bend it like Beckham.
Xmas is all about children and our youngest filmgoers will really be spoiled for choice this year with La foresta magica, based on a famous Spanish fairy tale and directed by Italy’s pre-eminent animated film producer, Enzo D’Alò and Lanterna Magica.
For those with a more refined palate, the choice is between The Man Without A Past by Aki Kaurismaki and David Cronenberg’s disturbing Spider.
