Ciné Cinéma buys movies

by

As 2002 drew to a close, a new TV channel joined the ranks of French TV channels and networks who also buy the broadcast rights to movies: Ciné Cinéma.
The pre-sale of feature films to TV channels and networks is essential for maintaining the French film industry in good health and has earned production companies over Euros285million annually. Euros100milion of which was forthcoming from terrestrial hertzian TVs, Euros175m from Pay-TVs (Euros25m and Euros 150m from respectively TPS and Canal+) and Euros10m from Ciné Cinéma.
CanalSatellite supplies content to its six channels (Premiere, Auteur, Frisson, Classics, Succès and Emotion) who air a total of around 1500 films annually, and so the network fulfilled its mandatory investment obligations as during the last three months of 2002, Ciné Cinéma bought the broadcast rights to 40 features including France boutique by Toni Marshall, Moi aussi je suis communiste by Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi and Pas sur la bouche by Alain Resnais.
Ciné Cinéma does not have the financial wherewithal to compete with the likes of Canal+ or TPS and consequently several films purchased by the network have already been aired on French television. However, the variety of programming schedules its six channels offers allows Ciné Cinéma to implement an acquisition strategy for all kinds of films. Furthermore, it intends spending its 2003 budget of Euros10m for 150 films, 75 of which are French.
