INDUSTRY Spain

Facing the crisis

by

Representatives of all categories of the Spanish film and audiovisual industry met on 21 January at the HQ of FAPAE (Federacion de Asociaciones de Productores Audiovisuales Españoles), to draw up a document about the current crisis afflicting that industry.
Spanish cinema needs to achieve a condition of parity if it is to have any hope of being competitive. The main points of the document, which is scheduled to be presented on the eve of the presentation of the Spanish equivalent of the Oscars, the “Goyas”, on 11 February highlight the industry’s inability to fill a sufficiently large quota of the national market. The American monopoly is absolute. The studios have even resorted to presenting made-for-TV movies that never saw the light of day in the US. So it is becoming more and more important for Spain to impose sanctions on its TV channels to oblige them to favour local productions and stop airing European films at impossible times of the day when viewership is at its lowest.
The document also calls for greater control and more support from politicians.
