New Cinema Forum Programme
- International Forum brings 52 new films, 26 of which world premieres, from 24 countries to Berlin
This year’s 33rd International Forum of New Cinema includes 52 films from 24 countries, and showcases contemporary independent filmmaking. Twenty-six of the films - half of the programme - are world premieres.
Digital works of all sorts will be screened at the CinemaxX, Kino Arsenal and Filmkunsthaus Babylon on an equal footing with 35mm productions. As in recent years, “Forum” premieres will be screened at the Delphi Filmpalast.
Once again German cinema will be well represented at the Forum. The opening film, Michwald, is the directorial debut of Christoph Hochhäusler, a graduate of Munich’s HFF film school. It is a contemporary take on one of the Grimm brothers’ most famous fairy tales: “Hansel and Gretel”, only set in a small town on the Polish-German border. Identity Kills, the second feature by Berlin-based Sören Voigt, is an experimental work that combines elements of documentary filmmaking into a narrative feature. Voigt was so keen that the acting and camerawork be spontaneous, that he decided against using a screenplay. The German selection also features documentaries and experimental works by Romuald Karmakar, Jörg Siepmann, Uli Gaulke and Jeanette Eggert, Barbara and Winfried Junge, Angelika Levi and Heinz Emigholz.
Fans of Hong Kong productions will enjoy the tribute to filmmaking siblings Run Run and Runme Shaw with a retrospective of five of their recently restored classics.
