ARTE seeks more viewers
At a press conference in Paris, Jérôme Clement, the new president of the French/German cultural broadcaster ARTE, announced he intends to modernise the channel’s programming in order to attract a younger audience, and bring socially relevant issues to the fore. “ We can accomplish our public service task only when we bring more people closer to culture,” he declared.
Clement also asked producers to stop thinking of ARTE to a broadcasting stereotype: “ARTE is not going to be only for the war in Bosnia and the catastrophes of the world” adding that future programmes will include documentaries, sitcoms and TV-series: “good quotas are compatible with our public service mission.”
ARTE is jointly managed by German public broadcasters ARD / ZDF and ARTE France. This year, ARTE France increased its budget for production and programme acquisition to Euros83m and the channel increased its market share from 3.1 per cent in 2001 to 3.2 per cent in 2002. Last year ARTE established joint ventures with 160 producers.
