- The artistic director announces the arrival of hundreds of films from 46 countries plus lots of glamour

At a standing-room-only press conference held today in Berlin, Dieter Kosslick, the artistic director of the 53rd Berlin Film Festival (6-16 Feb) announced the official programme.

The ten-day event will feature 300 films from 46 countries with France sending the most numerous contingent: 60 features, shorts and documentaries, followed by Scandinavia with 45, Germany with 40, the United States with 35, Brazil with 19 and Italy with 17. Kosslick also listed the 22 films that were selected for the Competition.
Kosslick added that Berlin is also glamour and this year’s special guests include stars of the calibre of Richard Gere, Nicole Kidman, George Clooney, Dustin Hoffmn, Nicolas Cage and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
As for the Competition, the United States leads the field with a total of five films, followed by three apiece from France and Germany, two each from the UK and China as well as films from Japan, Slovenia, Senegal, Australia, Spain and Holland.
Kosslick was eager to underline the importance of the first edition of the "Berlinale Talent Campus" where 500 young filmmakers from 60 countries worldwide will gather to exchange views, ideas and experiences. The Berlin 2003 programme also includes a review of the latest in contemporary Russian cinema while this year’s recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Golden Bear is French actress Anouk Aimée who will be presented with this important tribute on 13 February.
