5 Goyas for Los Lunes al Sol

- Fermando Leòn’s film wins five of the best at this year’s Spanish industry awards, with 1 Goya each for Almodòvar and Lazaro. Event ends with unanimous call for “Peace!”

by Fernando Leòn took home five major awards at the 17th Goya Awards on 1 February in Madrid. This year’s Spanish foreign language Oscar candidate won best film, director, newcomer (José Angell Egido), and supporting actor (Luis Tosar) while Javier Bardem’s victory as best actor was greeted with cheers and a standing ovation. : nominated for seven Goyas, the Golden Globe-winning feature ended up with the best musical score statuette for Alberto Iglesias. Emilio Martines Lazaro was another disappointed man after his musical comedy, El Otro Lado De La Cama (The Other Side of the Bed), nominated for six, won the Goya for best sound.
Film director Antonio Hernandez and writer Enrique Braso shared the best original screenplay Goya for En La Ciudad Sin Limites while best new director was won won by Julio Wallovitz and Roger Gaul for their low-budget feature, Smoking Room.
Mercedes Sampietro, won the best actress Goya for Lugares comunes while Geraldine Chaplin taking home the best supporting actress award.
Fermando Trueba’s El Embrujo de Shangai (The Spell of Shanghai) won several technical awards and Roman Polanski’s Il pianista [+see also:

was designated best European film.
Surprises were few and far between at this event but all those taking part voiced the hope that war with Iraq can be avoided.
