Chair left empty for Panahi at Geneva’s FIFDH

Iranian filmmaker and critic of his country’s regime, Jafar Panahi is one of the jury members (along with film director Jean-Stéphane Bron, writer Jorge Semprun and others) of the 9th International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights (FIFDH), to be held in Geneva from March 4-13.

Panahi, however, was recently sentenced to six years in prison in Iran because of his political activism. “Come what may, we will keep his seat for him”, say the festival organisers, who are well aware of the symbolic power of an empty chair.
