European Commission greenlights state aids for film
The European Commission’s General Directorate for Competition has announced that it has no objection to continue funding of the Vlaams Audiovisual Fund (VAF) until the end of 2011, while a review of the rules is expected in the course of the year.
The green light was also given to a support mechanism for documentary production in Catalonia as well as film funds in Northern Ireland (Northern Ireland Screen Fund) and Romania.
In general, the European Union’s rules allow state subsidies for cultural purposes. The specific criteria determining whether state film funding is compatible with European competition law are included in the 2001 Cinema Communication. This text has been revised three times and will expire on December 31, 2012.
