- Nurse Klivia sings and dances in Pieter Kramer's film inspired by Mary Poppins and Singin' in the Rain

The lone Dutch film in competition at the Berlinale is a musical comedy. Directed by Pieter Kramer who is better known for this television and stage work that for his films, Ja Zuster, Nee Zuster (Yes Nurse, No Nurse) is the screen adaptation of a popular TV series that was created by one of Holland’s pre-eminent writers, Annie M.G. Schmidt.
Set in the 1960s, Ja Zuster, Nee Zuster is set in an old people’s home run by Nurse Klivia and is reminiscent of classics like Mary Poppins and Singin’ in the Rain as well as slapstick comedies. The gags are simple and funny and clearly inspired by television.
"I find it hard to believe that Holland has never produced musical comedies. I consider myself lucky to have made one and one day, I’d like to make more," said Kramer. "The original story was a series of episodes and belong to our collective Dutch memories. In those days, Nurse Klivia was even more famous than the queen! "
Produced by film and TV company, Bos Bros Film & TV Productions, founded in 1989 and specialised in children’s films with Fortissimo Film Sales.
