Royal Film Library & Europe’s film heritage

The Royal Film Library of Belgium, in charge of the FIRST (Film Restoration and Conservation Strategies Project, organised a workshop, on 12 February, about the transcription of Europe’s film heritage into the digital format. The aim of the FIRST project is to restore, conserve and make Europe’s films more easily accessible.
Based on an idea by the Association of European Film Libraries (ACE), FIRST was adopted by the EU Commission’s IST programme, with financial backing from RTBF, dell’ORF, dell’INA, Belgacom and EMF.

The Berlin workshops have brought together film libraries, private collections, producers, digital laboratories and multimedia industries, and is the first important step towards the creation of an international network of organisations and industry experts for the conservation of European films, documentaries and footage.
