Almanya climbs box-office charts

, which was shown out of competition at the Berlinale (see review) before being launched on German screens by Concorde on March 10, has passed the 500,000 viewers mark.

The film, which garnered over 200,000 admissions in its first week on release, claimed third place in the rankings last weekend (behind Gnomeo and Juliet [+see also:

) with 106,414 viewers (according to kino.de). It thus overtook the big German hit of the year so far, Til Schweiger’s Kokowääh [+see also:

Samdereli’s comedy, which looks at the ties between Germany and Turkey and travels between the two countries whilst poking fun at clichés, is now the third most popular German film of the year. This bodes well a few days ahead of the Lolas - German Film Awards, where Almanya is vying for Best Film and Best Screenplay (see news).
