AFM 2003 UK

Politics at “Works”

by

Boosted by Michael Winterbottom's Golden Bear award for In This World, UK sales company The Works is bringing two other titles with a strong political backdrop to the American Film Market (AFM – Santa Monica, 19-26 February): John Boorman’s Country of My Skull (UK-South Africa) and Ludi Boeken and Michael Alan Lerner’s Deadline Beirut.
Country of my Skull, based on a book about the atrocities committed under apartheid written by a South African journalist called Artiie King, stars Samuel L. Jackson and Juliette Binoche, and was produced by Robert Chartoff, Mike Medavoy, Lynn Hendee and Kieran Corrigan.
Drawn from real life experiences, Deadline Beirut is a gritty tale of the danger and moral dilemmas faced by war correspondents. It stars Claire Forlani, Stephen Moyer and Omid Djalili and was directed by Ludi Boeken (the producer of Train de vie) and Michael Alan Lerner. Both titles are in pre-production.
The Works will also discuss two films in production: Winterbottom’s new Code 46 starring Tim Robbins and Samantha Morton, Stephen Fry’s directorial debut Bright Young Things ( based on Evelyn Waugh’s novel "Vile Bodies", as well as a new title in post-production, Deepa Mehta’s Republic Of Love (UK/Canada).
