Bertolucci to receive Honorary Palme d’Or

by

Awarded in the past on an irregular basis to major directors who have never won the Palme d'Or (like Woody Allen in 2002 and Clint Eastwood in 2009), the Cannes Film Festival’s Honorary Palme d’Or will now be presented every year at the opening ceremony.

Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci will kick off this new tradition by receiving the Honorary Palme d’Or on Wednesday, May 11, at the opening ceremony of the 64th Cannes Film Festival, before the jury headed by Robert De Niro (who appeared in Bertolucci’s legendary film 1900).

During his career, Bertolucci has been selected twice in competition at Cannes, in 1981 (Tragedy of a Ridiculous Man) and in 1996 (Stealing Beauty). He also received nine Oscars for The Last Emperor in 1988 (including Best Film and Best Director), two Oscar nominations for Last Tango in Paris in 1974 (Best Director and Best Actor for Brando) and one for The Conformist in 1972 (Best Screenplay).
