MEDIA celebrates 20 years with 20 films in Cannes

In 1991, the European Commission's MEDIA programme was launched to support European film industry and film professionals. This year, Androulla Vassiliou, Member of the European Commission for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, has chosen to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the programme at the very heart of the 64th Cannes Film Festival, which is showcasing a strong contingent of European films in all selections.

"For the Commission," says Mrs Vassiliou, "this is a significant year, with the MEDIA programme's anniversary. Since its launching, the MEDIA Programme has played an invaluable role in supporting the film industry and I have no doubt that it will continue to do so in the future."

This statement gives the industry a reason to smile, after the rumours earlier this year that the future of the MEDIA programme was in danger. José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, eventually launched a statement reassuring the Commission’s commitment to keep supporting the programme.

Twenty films supported by the MEDIA programme are screening this year in Cannes’ several sections:
