by

The London, Paris and Buenos Aires-based online video on demand provider MUBI has signed with British sales company HanWay Films to distribute its catalogue that includes films by Wim Wenders, Merchant Ivory and Bernardo Bertolucci, in addition to 50 films from the British Film Institute.

On the back of their output deal with Sony’s PlayStation3 (PS3) platform last year (see news), MUBI has also announced that their service will be pre-loaded on Sony’s internet-ready Bravia television sets that is due to ship some 30 million units across the world, including Europe, this year.

And, by late 2011, MUBI, in conjunction with Dolby, will offer 5.1 surround sound. In order to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Cannes Critics’ Week, MUBI is also launching today a free selection of 112 films from the programme for its subscribers.

The company has 1.4 million subscribers who have access to some 5000 titles from Celluloid Dreams, Criterion Collection, Costa Films (Latin America), Artificial Eye (UK), Bac Films (France), Cinéart (Belgium and Netherlands), Hopscotch (Australia) and the World Cinema Foundation, which was founded by Martin Scorsese.

MUBI is supported by the MEDIA Programme.
