Britain’s Jim Broadbent and Ben Whishaw, and Hugo Weaving, Halle Berry and Susan Sarandon are in negotiations to join Tom Hanks in the cast of Cloud Atlas, a European-American joint effort, which will be directed by Germany’s Tom Tykwer and the Wachowski siblings, from a script co-written by all three filmmakers.

The announcement was made to buyers in Cannes Friday.

As per the official blurb, Cloud Atlas is an “epic story of humankind in which the actions and consequences of our lives impact one another throughout the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a murderer into a savior and a single act of kindness ripples out for centuries to inspire a revolution.”

The script is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by British writer David Mitchell. The film will start shooting in September 2011. Grant Hill and Germany’s Stefan Arndt are producing through their new label Five Drops. Philip Lee is the executive producer.

Focus Features International is handling the worldwide sales in Cannes.
