Truth About Men: A comedy about commitment

by

The Taormina Film Fest competition, currently in its 57th edition, has focused on the Mediterranean since Italy-based US film critic Deborah Young took over the reigns in 2007.

A second competition, called Beyond the Mediterranean, highlights films from outside the region – one of the discoveries in the section this year is the Danish comedy-drama Truth About Men [+see also:

The film centres on protagonist Mads (Thure Lindhart), a screenwriter who has been in a long-term relationship with Marie (Tuva Novotny) but who, metaphorically speaking, ‘wakes up’ during his housewarming party to realise that this is not at all the life that he wants.

He quits not only his relationship with Marie, but also his secure (and absurdly boring) job as a TV writer on a series called Cops, and decides to write the film he's always dreamed of – although he's not exactly sure what that might be.

In the process, he has wild parties, meets a new girl (a real looker, Rosalynde Mynster) and comes to refreshing realisation about himself.

The film was written by Arcel and regular co-writer Rasmus Heisterberg and no doubt draws on their own experiences as screenwriters. One of the nicest touches in their screenplay is the use of excerpts from several projects that Mads has written, including an upbeat animated film and a terrible-looking period romance.

The film was distributed locally by Scanbox and was produced by Zentropa Entertainments, with backing from the Danish Film Institute, Danish Radio and Swedish Film i Vast. TrustNordisk is handling international sales.
