Van Damme flies in British UFO
Belgian actor Jean-Claude Van Damme (JCVD), popularly known as the Muscles from Brussels, is starring in a British sci-fi film UFO, production of which is underway in Derby.
Written and directed by Dominic Burns (Cut), UFO follows five friends who wake up one morning to see that there is a power outage and mobile phones and radios are not working. Matters get complicated when a massive UFO appears in the sky. Burns describes the film as “Independence Day meets Monsters, told from the point of view of Signs.”
Van Damme will play a retired military advisor in the film. Burns emailed Van Damme’s wife on the off chance that he might accept the role and was astonished when he accepted.
Burns said, “We heard he once visited Derby to take part in some sort of martial arts display for about an hour but then headed off. He'll be here for a little longer this time.”
Andy Thompson, Tim Major and Simon Phillips are producing the film for Hawtorn Productions. Hawthorn’s credits include Airborne, How To Stop Being A Loser, Jack Falls and Cut, all directed by Burns and The Last Seven, directed by Imran Naqvi.
The film will release in 2012.
