Woody Allen gets serious in Berlin
At the start of the week, a rumour started circulating that Woody Allen was in talks with Bavaria Studios about a possible forthcoming German project to be shot in Munich. On Wednesday, the online edition of German daily Die Welt published a lengthy interview with the New York-born director about his most recent projects and his European tour where the mention of Berlin also came up – although no specific Berlin-based partner has yet approached him, Allen points out.
Unlike the French capital, which naturally lends itself to a romantic storyline like Midnight in Paris [+see also:

film profile] (released in German theatres on August 18), Berlin and its composers, writers and philosophers conjure up something more serious for Allen. While lots of Americans would see Berlin as the ideal setting for a spy film, the director would be more inclined to set a philosophical-existential story there.
So far, Allen hasn’t yet reached a verdict on the Berlin/Munich alternative. The two cities interest him and seem to offer enough culture, activities and restaurants for him to be able to imagine spending time there.
