World cinema comes to Bruges
The Cinema Novo of Bruges in Belgium will celebrate its landmark 20th edition from 13-23 March. Initially created as a European showcase for Third World country films, the event subsequently extended its horizons to include Africa, Asia and Latin America.
This year’s edition will open with a Chinese film, Springtime in a Small Town (Xiao Cheng Zhi Chun) by Tian Zhuangzhuang and will close with Madame Satâ by Karim Arinouz (Brazil/Portugal). The programme includes some sixty films including Takeshi Kitano’s Dolls (Japan), EL crimen del Padre Amaro by Carlos Carrera (Mexico/Argentina/France) and Mexico’s nominee for this year’s best foreign film Oscar, as well as a raft of Argentine titles, premieres, exhibitions and concerts. Nine features were selected for competition including Oasis by Lee Chang-Dong (South Korea) and Bermani by Daniush Mehrju (Iran).
