Berlin reveals five competition titles and five special screenings

Five titles in competition at the upcoming Berlin International Film Festival (February 9-19, 2012) have been announced, and Europe is represented in each of them. Besides Antonio Chavarrías’s Spanish film Childish Games, two European co-productions are in the line-up: Philippine director Brillante Mendoza’s Captive, starring Isabelle Huppert (Philippines/France/Germany/UK); and Indonesian helmer Edwin’s Postcards From The Zoo, co-produced in Germany.

The two other titles selected in the Competition programme will be presented out of competition: British director Stephen Daldry’s US film Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close and Zhang Yimou’s The Flowers Of War, featuring Welsh actor Christian Bale.

Screening in the Berlinale Special section are Spanish director Álex de la Iglesia’s new film The Spark of Life [+see also:

, starring Salma Hayek, Fernando Tejero and Blanca Portillo; Kevin Macdonald’s UK/US documentary Marley; German helmer Werner Herzog’s US documentary series Death Row; Indian blockbuster Don – The King is Back (co-produced in Germany); and Keyhole by Canada’s Guy Maddin, starring Isabella Rossellini and Udo Kier.
