Olsen and Nielsen get Carl Th.Dreyer Awards

Yesterday March 6th, filmmakers Annette K.Olesen and Jesper W.Nielsen both received the prestigious Carl Th.Dreyer Award at the Danish Film Institute’s Cinematheque. The annual award attached with a Dk30,000 grant (Euros4,000) is assigned to young filmmakers or film professionals who have distinguished themselves within the Danish film sector.

Olsen who attended the Danish National Film School in the 1980s, started her career shooting documentaries, short films and commercials before making her directorial debut with Sma Ulykker [+see also:

(Minor Mishaps). The film won the Best European Film Award for its ensemble cast at the 2002 Berlin Film Festival and made 113.419 admissions in Denmark. Olesen’s next film, a Dogme#10 film yet untitled, will tell the story of Anna (Ann Eleonora Jørgensen), a newly ordained minister who is appointed as a stand-in for a prison chaplain. Produced by Zentropa’s Ib Tardini and sold by Trust Film Sales, the film will be released in Denmark next August.
Jesper W.Nielsen also attended the Danish National Film School and directed several children film before the bittersweet comedy Okay which attracted some 235.023 Danish cinemagoers in 2002. The lead actress Paprika Steen was recently named Best actress for the film at the recent Robert and Bodil Awards.

Nielsen’s next project The Bouncer (Løftet) is a drama starring Nicolai Coster Waldau (Black Hawk Dawn) and Iben Hjejle (High Fidelity). Like Okay! the film is produced by Angel Films' Peter Bech and will open in Denmark two weeks before Olesen’s Dogme film.
