FUNDING France

Arte France Cinéma to support Stéphane Demoustier and Lars von Trier

by

- The Franco-German television channel’s film arm is to co-produce Terre battue and Nymphomaniac

Back from Cannes with a grand total of eight awards for its 25 films at Cannes this year, the film arm of Franco-German television channel Arte has just announced that it will support two new features with co-production and pre-acquisitions: Terre battue by French director Stéphane Demoustier and Nymphomaniac by Danish director Lars von Trier.

Terre battue, which has already been selected by Emergence and has been promised an advance on receipts by the French National Film and Moving Image Centre (CNC), will be Stéphane Demoustier (photo)’s first feature. The filmmaker, who is Shooting Star actress Anaïs Demoustier’s brother, graduated from the famous French higher education institutions of HEC and Sciences Po, played tennis to a high level, and has made several notable short films. His debut feature, to be shot this summer, is to star Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi, Belgian actor Olivier Gourmet, and Xavier Beauvois. Produced by Les Films Velvet and co-produced by Les Films du Fleuve (the Dardenne brothers’ production company), Terre Battue tells the tale of a father and son’s parallel destinies, both driven by an obsession to succeed. In just a few months, Jérôme (Gourmet) fails repeatedly. He is fired, he fails at starting up the chain store that he had imagined, and his wife leaves him. But at the same time, his 11-year-old son is doing extremely well in the region’s tennis tournaments. Although he has witnessed his father’s failures, the latter is determined not to give up on his dreams of becoming a champion.

A loyal partner to Danish director Lars von Trier, Arte France Cinéma is also to support Nymphomaniac (read more here and here), for which filming will kick off in August with Stellan Skarsgard and Charlotte Gainsbourg in the cast (production: Slot Machine, Zentropa, Arte/ZDF).
