After The Killing and Borgen, DR launches August's The Legacy

- Before being aired in Denmark, Swedish actress-turned-director Pernilla August's drama of the 1968 generation and their children has been sold to the UK, Benelux and Australia

The international success of Danish pubcaster DR's series The Killing and Borgen/Government has paved the way for more Danish TV drama - at this year's MIPCOM Market in Cannes, which ends today (October 12), DR International Sales licensed The Legacy by Swedish actress-turned-director Pernilla August (photo) to the UK, Benelux and Australia.

"We meet a growing interest for our drama productions from international buyers, and in Cannes three would sign on the spot, while we started discussions with several more," explained head of DR International Sales Helene Aurø.

The Legacy, which is still under production to arrive with Danish audiences by early 2014, is August's second directorial assignment, after her feature debut Beyond (2010) won her the Nordic Council's Film Prize – Scandinavia's largest – two Guldbagger, Sweden's national film award, and festival accolades from Lübeck and Hamburg to Venice and Sao Paolo.

Scripted by Maya Ilsøe (who also wrote DRTV's Christmas calendar The Pact), the series is a modern portrait of a family – a drama of the 1968 generation and their children during a time when classic family patterns changed radically. Starring Trine Dyrholm, Jesper Christensen and Kirsten Olesen, it is produced by DR Fiction producer Christian Rank.

Borgen, which just earned Sidse Babett Knudsen an Emmy nomination for Best Actress (which she might cash in on November 19), has already been sold to five continents; at MIPCOM Aurø closed deals for French-speaking Canada, Greece and Tyrkey, while Spain, Israel and Japan are in negotiations. – 12,000 sellers and buyers from 104 countries attended the market.
