Cinema celebrates Women in Thessalonica
The Cinema Club of the Trade Union Centre (TUC) of Thessaloniki has organised a celebration of Women in films that will take place during March and April of this year. The event includes classics about the history of women’s rights and their struggle for equality, like Salt of the Earth by Herbert Biberman (USA, 1952), a story based on a miners’ strike in 1951 in Mexico Rosa Luxembourg-Karl Liebknech by Gunder Rais about last phases of the November Revolution of 1918 in Germany, and Sweet Emma, Dear Bobe by the Oscar-winning Hungarian director of Mephisto (Best Foreign Film in 1981), Istvan Szabo. This film is an intimate, deeply moving and extremely penetrating film about Hungary as it struggles to escape the legacy of 50 years of communist rule.
