Finnish director Antti Jokinen's Purge[+see also: trailer film profile] (photo) and Aku Louhimies' Naked Harbour[+see also: trailer interview: Laura Birn film profile] both received eight nominations, when the Filmauri association of film professionals announced the contenders for the 2013 Jussis - Finland's national film prize, which was instigated in 1944. The awards will be presented at a February 3 gala in Helsinki.
Both selections are competing in the main categories of Best Film, Best Director (the Jussis cover a total of 14, adding Best Documentary. Runners-up include Maarit Lalli's Almost 18[+see also: trailer film profile], with six noms, and Kari Juusonen-Jørgen Lerdam's Niko 2 - Little Brother, Big Trouble[+see also: trailer film profile] and Matti Kinnunen's Miss Blue Jeans, each with four.
The adaption of Sofi Oksinen's novel, which won the Nordic Council Literary Award in 2007, Purge is set in Estonia, where it follows two generations of women before an after Soviet regime, intertwining the lives of Aliide, a villager, and Zara, a victim of human trafficking.
Purge took 208,501 admissions domestically, to become No 3 on the chart of local fare. With a plot of seven parallel stories, Naked Harbour is set in the suburb of Vuosaari, the last stop on the metro line, as an episodic picture of today's Finland.
