Britons and Irish ignore Jubilee and Olympics to embrace cinema

Box office and admissions figures published by the Cinema Exhibitors’ Association reveal that despite having many rivals for their eyeballs, the British and Irish public continued their love affair with cinema. The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and also the European Football Championships were mere distractions as total box office for 2012 soared to £1,099,095,773, 5.9% up from 2011. Admissions reached 172,498,775, a 0.5% increase from 2011.

became the highest ever grosser in the market, becoming the first ever film to break the £100 million mark.
