- The award opens the doors for distribution in the Dutch market
Bellas Mariposas [+see also:
film profile], Salvatore Mereu’s latest film (read the interview) presented in the Horizons section of the Venice Film Festival, was awarded the Big Screen Award at the Rotterdam 2013 International Film Festival.
The award for the new Big Screen section, assigned by a jury made up of the general public, is particularly important because it opens the door to Dutch market film distribution.
Bellas Mariposas was recognised for its “refreshing” essence which should be “an addition to what Dutch cinema can offer,” a film with a “young outlook, a celebration of life.”
Set in the outskirts of Cagliari, the film, produced by Viacolvento in collaboration with Rai Cinema, was based on a similarly named Sergio Atzeni tale, which tells the story of two girls living in difficult family and social environments. The cast includes two newcomers Maya Mulas and Sara Podda playing the main parts, as well as Micaela Ramazzotti in the role of the prophet sorceress.
