06/03/2013 - Skyfall director to focus on theatre, television projects

film profile] has decided to go out on a high and bow out of the next edition. “It has been a very difficult decision not to accept Michael and Barbara’s very generous offer to direct the next Bond movie,” Mendes told Empire magazine. “Directing Skyfall was one of the best experiences of my professional life, but I have theatre and other commitments, including productions of Charlie And The Chocolate Factory and King Lear, that need my complete focus over the next year and beyond.”

Producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli said, “We thoroughly enjoyed working with Sam, he directed our most successful Bond movie ever, Skyfall. We would have loved to have made the next film with him but completely respect his decision to focus on other projects and hope to have the opportunity to collaborate with him again.”

Mendes is also working on television series Penny Dreadful where some of literature's most terrifying characters, including Dr. Frankenstein and his creature, Dorian Gray and Dracula terrorise Victorian London. Skyfall co-writer John Logan has penned it and Mendes is directing and producing.

Meanwhile, Skyfall has grossed more than $1.1 billion worldwide and is the highest grossing UK film of all time with collections of over £100 million.
