Winners of 43rd Tampere Film Festival announced

- Short film festival sees Grand Prix going to the UK

The Tampere Film Festival finished last week with event cementing its status as one of the most important film festivals on the circuit. With a legendary reputation in the industry, not only for the films but for the infamous Sauna Party, this year’s festival was an exploration of the short film form while including some fascinating retrospectives of shorts originating in Asia.

The National Competiton saw Jenni Rahkonen win for Best Film Under 30 Minutes with When One Stops while, in the Over 30 Minutes category, the winner was feature documentary Finnish Blood Swedish Heart by Mika Ronkainen which also won the national audience award.

The Risto Jarva Award, dedicated to a legendary Finnish filmmaker, was divided between the documentaries 6954 Kilometres Home by Juan Reina, and – once again - Finnish Blood Swedish Heart.  The Youth Jury Award went to Thoughts About Dying by Jani Ilomäki while the student prize went to Out into the Woods, 2012 by Jussi Lehtomäki.

The Grand Prix of Tampere was won by the stunning UK film The Mass of Men directed by Gabriel Gauchet. In the Best Fiction category, the winner was Argentinian film Murder in Junín while Finnish film Gates of Life gained Best Documentary. The biting and satirical Sunday 3 from Germany and directed by Jochen Kuhn, won the category prize for Best Animation and the nomination for the European Film Awards. Festival director Jukka-Pekka Laakso decided to ring Kuhn live on stage with the news with the bemused director giving his thanks in a train full of sleeping commuters. The festival audience award for International film was won by Polish filmmaker Lukasz Ostalski for his film Mother
