Global collections on the rise, but Europe in decline
- Worldwide box office reached $34.7 billion in 2012
Global box office collections are increasing, but the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) segment is on the wane, according to latest 2012 statistics released by the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA). Collections worldwide totalled $34.7 billion in 2012, up 6% from 2011, with the US/Canada market accounting for $10.8 billion of it. While all other markets registered upward growth, the EMEA region declined 1% and fell from $10.8 billion in 2011 to $10.7 billion in 2012.
The biggest box office leap was in China, which grew 36% to reach $2.7 billion, making it the largest market outside North America. The UK and France remain Europe’s largest markets, accounting for $1.7 billion each, followed by Germany with $1.3 billion and Russia with $1.2 billion.
Cinema screens grew 5% in 2012 and there are now some 130,000 around the world. Of these, EMEA accounts for nearly 40,000. 14,000 of these screens are digital 3D and 12,000 digital non3D with the rest being analog. Over two-thirds of the world’s cinema screens are now digital.
