International success of Gallic programmes

- Joint CNC-TV France International survey analyses European performance of 95 French TV programmes from Sept 2001 to June 2002

French television productions were seen by a total of 92 million viewers in Germany, Italy, the UK and Spain. That was the main result of the 2nd industry survey carried out and presented yesterday at MipTV in Cannes by the CNC (National Film Centre) and TV France International, the agency that promotes French programmes abroad.

The survey covers September 2001 to June 2002 and analysed the performance of 95 French programmes that aired in the above-mentioned European countries.

Germany is France’s biggest client, where 30 programmes, the most popular being documentaries, were seen by 24 million viewers.
32 million Italian viewers tuned into 26 programmes, with drama leading the popularity stakes while 22 milllion UK residents watched 21 programmes, and 14 million Spaniards chose 18 French productions, with cartoons leading the field.

The CNC-TV France International survey also found that CNC funding, via TV production support fund COSIP, was up by 10.5 per cent with respect to 2001. A total of 4,658 hours’ worth of programmes received Euros212.5m. Internal investment totalled Euros656.7m while foreign contributions to French production came to Euros152.2m.
In terms of content, dramas received the lion’s share (51 per cent), 29 per cent went to documentaries, live shows got 4 per cent and magazine programmes brought up the rear with just 3 per cent.
