- The Directors’ Assembly organizes two debates in Cannes
This year, the Directors’ Assembly, organized by the Directors' Fortnight in Cannes, will turn into an exceptional platform for directors from all around the world to discuss with members of the industry and share their experiences and ideas with the public.
Two exceptional sessions will take place at the Théâtre Croisette, on Saturday, May 18th, and Tuesday, May 21st, at 2.30 p.m. Directors will be invited to participate in debates on stage with a host.
The session on Saturday, May 18th, will focus on: Experiences of independent directors all over the world
From their experiences, directors will talk about film production conditions and financial support schemes for movie-making worldwide. It may be about independent films in the United States, financing in India, China, Brazil, and about everything directors wish to point out as well…
They will talk about new creative and economic momentum that they conjure up and develop to make their films. Daring productions sometimes turn away from cinema support schemes, as their heaviness and slowness weigh on creative energy.
Questions will be raised about these different systems and contexts when tested in the field, and about individual work methods.
The session on May 21st is entitled: The European crisis and its consequences on its Member States’ cultural policies
Often in Europe, institutional stakeholders, producers and distributors orchetsrate debates on the economics of movie-making, in which directors have a hard time finding their rightful place.
Re-assessment of national cinema support schemes, coproductions' difficulties, shrinking European funds… What role can they play in discussions about cultural policies?
Cinema is not just an industry, neither is it an industry like any other: between cultural ambition and economic power, how can the apparent contradictions between regulations, competition and cultural exception be solved?
As a partner of the event, Cineuropa will be on-site to relay the debates.
