Death of Peter Sehr

- Less than six months after the release of Ludwig II, co-directed by his wife Marie Noëlle, the director of Kaspar Hauser has died from cancer

The director from Hesse, Peter Sehr, who was suffering from a brain tumour, died last week in Munich, at the age of 61. His disappearance occurred only a few months after the release of Ludwig II [+see also:

Sehr studied biophysics in Zurich and Oxford and worked for the Curie Institute in Paris before embarking upon a career in the cinema in the early 80's – he was in particular Claude Lelouch's assistant on Itinéraire d'un enfant gâté before founding the company P’Artisan Filmproduktion with his wife Marie Noëlle in 1988.

In all, he directed six fiction feature films, which were all acclaimed. His first film, Die serbische Mädchen (1991), was followed by the famous Kaspar Hauser (1993), rewarded notably in Locarno. After Berlin Niagara (1997) featuring Daniel Craig, French actor Charles Berling and Heike Makatsch, Sehr worked with Adrien Brody and August Diehl in Love the Hard Way (2001), also rewarded in Locarno. Peter Sehr, Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France and member of the German Film Academy, the Franco-German Academy and the European Film Academy (EFA), was deeply involved in European coproductions.
