‘Greece on the Screen’ in Brussels
The Vendome Cinema in Brussels is the venue for the first leg of a 9-country European tour by Greek cinema entitled Greece on the Screen and scheduled to run from March-to-June 2003 as part of the Greek EU presidency.
The Belgian event will run from 27 March to 1 April and showcase 13 films produced between 1961 and 2001. The filmmakers represented include pioneers from the 50s and 60s like Tzavellas, Cacoyannis, Koundouros and Georgiadis; filmmakers who were active in the 70s and contributed to creating the new school of Greek Cinema like Angelopoulos, Voulgaris and Panayotopoulos; as well as contemporary "names" like Avdeliodis, Goritsas, Giannaris and Panayotopoulou. Films by internationally renowned directors like France’s "honorary Greek", Jules Dassin, and Nikos Papatakis, who was born in Ethiopia and emigrated to France, will also be screened. The event will open with Hard Goodbyes: My Father by Penny Panayotopoulou, and starring Stelios Mainas who won the best actor Leopard at last year’s Locarno Film Festival.
