Hungarian cinema received a major encouragement from the jury of the 48th International Film Festival of Karlovy Vary which awarded the Crystal Globe to the drama by János Szász, The Notebook coproduced with Germany, France and Austria, and which was the favourite of the Cineuropa team.

The Special Prize of the Jury went to British director Ben Wheatley for A Field In England whilst the Best Director Award went to Czech director Jan Hřebejk (Honeymoon). The performance in XL of Icelandic actor Ólafur Darri Ólafsson owed him a Best Actor Award while a collective prize rewarded actresses Amy Morton, Louisa Krause, Emily Meade and Margo Martindale for their role in Bluebird, a coproduction between the United States and Sweden.

As for the East of the West competition, the Prize was awarded to Polish director Tomasz Wasilewski for Floating Skyscrapers with a Special Mention for the Czecho-Slovakian coproduction Miracle by Juraj Lehotský.

Unsurprisingly, the excellent Czech comedy Revival by Alice Nellis received the Prize of the Public, although it had been screened out of competition right at the end of the festival.

Finally, the Europa Cinemas Label Award was also attributed to The Notebook “for its intense depiction of childhood, death and life during wartime, with many metaphors, realistic violence, but also hope for a better future.”
